POST 3 ANGELA BORDI

Personally, I find striking the moment in which Jay is killed, I couldn`t believe that Wilson could do something of that kind. What`s more, I couldn´t accept that Gatsby died because of Daisy`s fault and even worse, because of Daisy´s insensitivity.
While I was reading I was thinking about every little detail and my own expectations , that I had as a reader but the way in which the story developed later, I wasn`t prepared for that unexpected end. In my opinion, The Great Gatsby made me think about the materialistic world and to such extent a person can love and change his/her life completely so as to be involved in such amazing but passionate story that would end with his/her life. If I would have the chance to be with Scott Fitzgerald ,as Gil Pender does in Midnight in Paris, I would ask him if Nick was saying all the truth and nothing but the truth in the novel, and if Daisy could have change her mind if divorce wasn`t badly seen by society, in order to marry Gastby.

post 1 and 3 Romina Vargas

Posts 1 and 3

After reading the whole novel I can confirm that I was right about my predictions in the Voice Thread. There was an affair between Daisy and Gatsby. And also I was right about my predictions of the covers of the books, since in one of them there was a girl who seemed to be crying and that made me think that the novel would be about a dramatic love story.

The characters:
  • Nick Carraway -  The novel’s narrator. Honest, tolerant, and inclined to reserve judgment, Nick often serves as a confidant for those with troubling secrets.
  • Jay Gatsby - He is a fabulously wealthy young man. He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night, but no one knows where he comes from.
  • Daisy Buchanan -  Nick’s cousin, and the woman Gatsby loves. She is sardonic and somewhat cynical, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’s constant infidelity.
  • Tom Buchanan -  Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. He has an affaire with Myrtle Wilson.
  • Jordan Baker -  Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel.
  • Myrtle Wilson -  Tom’s lover.
  •  Wilson- Myrtle`s husband and murderer of Gatsby
Quotation:

"Somebody told me that he killed a man once." "It's more that he was a German spy during the war." "You look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody's looking at him. I bet he killed a man."
This is just some of the rumors surrounding Gatsby and his immense wealth. Gatsby is shrouded in mystery, and has a dark past. This quotation made me think that Gatsby was a criminal, but when I kept reading I realized that my thoughts were completely wrong.

·         What ideas/moments in the novel did you personally find more striking?

- Nick found out that Tom had another woman.
- Nick attended one of the Gatsby's parties and met him.
- Nic
k met Mrs Willson,Tom's lover, at Mr Willson's garage.
-  Gatsby and Daisy finally met at Nick’s house.
-  Daisy killed Myrtle Willson.
- Gatsby confessed to Nick it was Daisy who killed Myrtle.
- Mr Willson killed Gatsby and then killed himself.
·
  •  What were you thinking about as you read?
While I was reading the novel I was thinking about all the things that people can do in order to achieve what they want, since in the whole novel is shown how materialist and selfish people can behave and act through different situations

·         What did the text make you think about?

It made me think that despite this story is set in the 20s, shallowness and snobbery haven't faded away, and that they are still present nowadays in our society.

·         What one question would you ask the writer if you got the chance? Why?

I would ask him why is that Daisy didn't chose Gatsby when she had the chance instead of Tom. After all, he was now a wealthy man. And also, why he killed Gatsby in the novel… I was completely disappointed with Gatsby’s death.  I didn't expect it at all!

Post 3 - Pedrido Cecilia

Personally, the moments I found more striking were from the last three chapters. But if I have to choose, I would say when Gatsby and Daisy first meet after so long, when Tom finds out what was going on with Daisy and Gatsby and when they quarrel at the hotel.

As I was reading the book, I was always thinking and predicting what would happen next. As I wrote many predictions in the 2nd post, I can say that most of them have been asserted.

This text made me think that sometimes when we desire to get something that we really want to have, we can unintentionally behave in a very selfish way and we don't recognise the effects or consequences that may produce on others. And so, it is very important to be cautious and keep our eyes open so as to avoid having problems.
It made me think about this because I noticed that most of the characters in the novel behaved in this way. They didn't care about other people´s feelings. In the case of Gatsby, he just concentrated in his objective and he didn't care about what the others could say about him.

If I would have the chance to ask the writer a question, It would be why he did not add at the end a possible Daisy's reaction when Gatsby died? Because I expected in the end Daisy had changed her feelings and had gone to Gatsby's funeral since she was deeply in love with him.

POST 3 - Andreoni Gabriela

It called my attention how much Gastby was in love with Daisy, and all the things and risks that he was completely willing to take for her. His strong desire to be together once more, as they did years ago. He is not capable of realising or admitting that everything was in vain, and that he cannot keep that dream alive.

As I read I couldn´t stop thinking what Nick could have done to make Gatsby realize that she is not going to leave Tom, and that she doesn´t really love him.

It made me think that we many times idealize others. We choose to see people in the way we would like them to be. And all those characteristics that we find in them, no matter how few they are, they can have a big impact on as.

I would ask Fitzgerald, "Why did not Nick try to be honest and tell Gastby and Daisy what he thought about their situation, and his impression on them?". I would ask this because Nick cared about a Gatsby, and if he was to be a good friend he should have been more honest and stopped him. I think he encouraged Gatsby´s obsession with Daisy, for example by meeting them again, knowing that she was married and did not care for him.

POST 3 DAIANA ASCANIO

After all, I could finish reading the book. It takes me quite a lot, but I really enjoyed reading it.

If I have to think about the most striking moments I would focus on the last chapters. Why? because it is there when the story starts to make more sense or may be gets more interesting. But, one of the things that call my attention was the two unexpected deaths, actually they were three. First Myrtle´s and then Gatsby´s and George´s.
The way in which Fitzgerald describes them really gives me goosebumps, as when he says "Myrtle Wilson´s body, wrapped in a blanket, and then in another blanket, as though she suffered from a chill in the hot night..."

While I was reading the book, I tried to predict what were going to happen, and I imagined things like Gatsby and Daisy maybe would end up together, but sincerely I have never thought something like that. Although I don´t like the end, beacause in my opinion Gatsby didn´t deserve the death, there was always a kind of mystery in the book that tell us that something wrong would happen. At least it is my point of view.

If I would have the opportunity to ask something to the writer,my question would be "why did Nick forget his birthday? and why did Myrtle´s death happen the same day?... Maybe Nick had became so involved with Gatsby´s rich, society life, that he forgot about his own...
