Hello!
ReplyDeleteWhile I was reading the Wordle it came to my mind that the story may be about (of course) of a girl called Eveline. May be...:
She lives in a house situated in an avenue where she can see through the window many people, stores and houses.
The main characters may be: Eveline, her father and mother and Frank (perhaps Eveline's confidant). There are also other witness characters: her brothers and sisters, Ernest and Harry.
Eveline might be remembering one saturday night when she went to school, what she used to do with her friends and what she used to like...
Perhaps, she is old now and realise that now she has to work hard and that she doesn't feel alive as she used to feel when she was little.
I supposed that Frank and her father are really important in the story. Frank, as I said before, may be her best friend and the one she trust in. And her father, might be the one who provides her not only with a house, but also, with a life full of joy.
That's all for now! I hope I understood the task...
See you :)
Paula
Great job, Paula! You have a purpose for reading now! Read and find out how accurate your predictions were.
ReplyDeleteHi all!! I think this story is about a young woman called Eveline, who is about to get married. She doesn't know whether to marry Frank( a rich man) or leave him and follow his lover Harry, an older man she knew where she works. When Eveline decides what to do she talks to her sisters who help her and then to her parents.Ernest, her father, is a huge problem as he is a very strict man, while her mother is the kind of person for whom money is the most important thing in life.
ReplyDeleteI imagine this story takes place in a small town and Eveline's decision is highly influenced by this fact, as we all know gossip in small towns is terrible and Eveline doesn't want to hurt anybody.
Hello! My predictions about Eveline are: the story talks about a girl called Eveline. May be she felt very sad and missed a lot her father, Harry, who had recently died. She used to live in the city with her family, but she didn´t get on well with her mother. So after her father´s death she decided to move to the countryside and start a new life. Now, she lives in a hill and as she has no money, Eveline has to work hard in the fields. There she met a new friend named Frank, who became one of her confident best friend.
ReplyDeletesee you!

Hello! I couldn't see the image completely on wordle.net but it seems to be a very attractive picture as well as a useful tool to remenber important words.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the story is about a girl called Eveline that left her home, family and town when she was fifteen to take a chance in the city to improve their living condition. She succeeded getting a job but she forget about her family. Then she got married with Frank. One day, after twenty years she decided to return to her town and she tries to imagine what would have happend if she had never left home.
Highly imaginative predictions! Of course there are no right or wrong answers, but most of you have included references to family, home and love. Let's see what you find!
ReplyDeleteIn the Wordle, I could identify two main lexical sets, one implying a urban setting: houses, money, stores, avenues. Probably the story will take place in a city in Ireland, as the author, James Joyce, was Irish. There is also a reference to “Buenos Ayres”, our own capital city. The other main lexical set is related with the family: mother, father, brothers.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least four names: Frank, Eveline, Margaret and Derevaun. These are possibly the main characters. Eveline is more surely the protagonist of the story, but not necessary the narrator.
A word that caught my attention was “cretonne” (A heavy unglazed cotton, linen, or rayon fabric, colorfully printed and used for draperies and slipcovers. )
Now it is time for predictions. For me, the story is about a poor girl living in a city in Ireland, who dreams with leaving home and going to Buenos Ayres, the “South American Paris”.

What I can predict about the story is that Eveline is the protagonist, she lives in a city on a avenue, her mother or father has dead. She goes to school and maybe she likes taking photographs. She would like to live in Busnos Ayres. She`s got two brothers, Harry and Ernest. I think the family is poor, because there it says money, so maybe they don`t have enough money.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! I think the story is about a girl named Eveline who just came to a turning point in her life. She must decide whether to be with Frank or with Harry or... Ernest; she wonders if she should stay or go away; if she should listen to her mother or what peolple say; if she doesn't work she won't have any money to build up a home, so what can she do?; and what would her father think of all this??!... Anyhow, her life has gone completely upside down, she can't continue having these doubts for ever, she must decide... something!
ReplyDeleteAfter looking carefully at the Wordle, I can imagine that we are going to read about Eveline’s life. As a child she lived happily with her father, Frank, her mother, Margaret, and her sisters. At school, she met a boy called Harry and they soon became inseparable friends. They lived in a little city called Buenos Ayres, in Trinidad and Tobago. Years went by and they inevitably fell in love with each other. They were really happy together, they were the perfect couple. But one Saturday Ernest, Harry’s father, told him and his brothers they must move to a distant country as he had been moved at work. Harry was profoundly in love with Eveline but he was too young to stay and live on his own, so he was forced to leave. But that evening, Eveline was in the countryside visiting her grandmother and Harry couldn’t explain the situation to her or even say goodbye. He left her a letter with a promise: he would come back and they would spend their lives together...
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the story is about an Irish family (As the words DEREVAUN, SERAUN and the last name KEOGH called my attention, I looked them up and the three of them have their origin in Ireland) The protagonist, of course, is EVELINE, a young woman who lived with her MOTHER, MARGARET, her FATHER, ERNEST, and her BROTHERS and SISTERS (FRANK and HARRY) It should be a wealthy family (as BUSINESS is mentioned) One of its members died, maybe his FATHER, or they thought him DEAD. EVELINE was in DISTRESS. After that, she fell in LOVE with the SAILOR and went to live to a PATAGONIAN HILL. But he was too HARD on her, he has an IRON HAND upon her. So, she ran away and bought a PASSAGE from BUENOS AYRES to Ireland. When she arrived, she saw her FATHER. She thought she had seen a GHOST. But, to her surprise, he was ALIVE.
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteI expect to read about Eveline`s life or something related to her, because Eveline is the title of the story, that may be takes place long time ago, because it is an old name of Norman origin.
As regards the characters Eveline must be the protagonist and probably the other characters are in connection with her family as her father or brothers.
The setting could be Eveline´s house in any place in Europe.

Angela says:
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view, the story is about a girl whose name is Eveline. One evening she fell asleep and started to imagine that something bad was happening, maybe to her family (Frank, Margaret, Harry and Ernest). So she travel to other towns and cities in order to look for one of her family members and in the way she found a boy whom she liked a lot. Then together found happiness. But when she awake everything was allright.
Hope it near to the real story or at least you like it.
Angela.
Angela said she had posted her comment 4 times and it had been deleted, so she emailed it to me. Guess what: I posted a comment today at noon and I must have failed to do sth because it is nowhere to be seen, either!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed by all the research done, especially by Walter, Celeste and Debora. I hope everyone can profit by so much supplementary information!
I'm also impressed by the detailed stories some of you have created. I had thought you would point out some directions the plot might take, but it seems we have a number of budding novelists!
I guess everybody is highly motivated to read the story now!
Hi everyone!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the story is about a teenage girl called, of course, Eveline. When she sat at the window watching the evening, I think that many thoughts came to her mind, maybe an adventure travelling around the world looking for the man of her dreams! And on her trip she met new people and met amazing places, she got involved in some troubles when finally find "the man", that she has been waiting for!
I hope it is a love story!
Cintia.
Thanks for contributing, Cintia! Interesting thoughts!
ReplyDeleteHi!!
ReplyDeleteI think that the story is about a girl called Eveline. One day she was in her house after school, waiting for his boyfriend frank who was supposed to visit her. She was with her mother and her father and suddenly looked at an accident in front of the house. Frank who was known as the best seller of houses from town was now dead in the avenue. It was hard to believe that saturday would turn like this. This man was the love of her life and she would miss him for life.
Hello everyone! I think the story is about a middle-aged woman called Eveline who remembers how her life used to be when she was a teenager: her family, her house, her friends, her love. Maybe there is a decision she made that she lives to regret.
ReplyDeleteI found Celeste’s input very interesting and the way it was expressed as well so I am trying to use the same typographic markers.
ReplyDeleteI believe this story will be centered in EVELINE’s life. She is an elderly woman or someone who is heavily influenced by her past (USED - REMEMBERED) and the relationship with her FATHER who perhaps ran the house with an IRON HAND. This strict upbringing led her to elopement (or just ran away from HOME) and to a crossroad between HARRY (a wealthy suitor with a lot of MONEY) and her one and only LOVE: FRANK. Whoever she married and had CHILDREN with, she ALWAYS second guessed herself.
