The Great Gatsby: Before reading the novel

Before you start reading a book, it's always a good idea to explore it. Do you know the names of the different parts? Watch this presentation to find out.

The illustration on the front cover should enable you to predict what kind of book you are about to read. Different editions of the same book will have different illustrations.

The Voicethread below includes four different covers of The Great Gatsby (clicking on the picture will enlarge the image).

This blurb can be found in one edition:
"The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.
The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature."

Look at the images, read the blurb and then record your comment: what do you think the novel will be about?  (Note: if you have already read the novel, tell us what the main differences among the covers are in your view) You can also see the covers in greater detail  below.

  1. I think the novel is going to be about dancers, or maybe parties, because of the images I can see on the different corvers. They are all different, but all of them have something in common, they seem to be about theatre or acting, since women are wearing dance costumes. Apart from that, the novel seems to be about women, because in all the pictures there are women.

  2. I think that this story is about one of the most powerful and affluent families in Chicago, whose forename is Gatsby. It takes place during the second decade of the twentieth century. I imagine that this family has a lavish and comfortable lifestyle and belong to the highest social class. This story is related with organized crime, discrimination, alcohol, violence, mafia and jazz music too. One of the members of this family, the youngest son behaves in a wrong way. He has a romance with a woman who leads him into trouble.

  3. In my opinion I expect this novel to be interesting and exciting because of the time and place where the events are taking place. The roaring twenties represent a period of sustained economic prosperity in the US, where new technologies and products appeared (e.g.: automobile, movie industries, etc), mass production took place and “prohibition” was introduced causing the rise of jazz, organized crime and smuggling.
After reading the blurb and watching the front covers I suppose that the story is going to be about a wealthy man called Gatsby who is going to meet a girl called Daisy in one of the lavish parties he usually goes to and fall deeply in love with her. Unfortunately the bad temptations of the decade will seduce one of them and things would never be the same.

  5. I can infer the novel is set in America before the Wall Street Crash. That time is often referred to as the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age" which was characterized by rapidly changing lifestyles, financial excesses, charleston music, alcohol, and the fast pace of technological progress.

  6. To my mind, this novel is going to be too much enjoyable because it´s situated in a very interesting time : "Jazz Age". As we know it´s a movement that took place during the 1920s. So, with the fact that jazz music and dance had emerged, watching the different covers and reading the blurb, I would say that this novel is going to be about a man Gatsby that fall in love with Daisy Buchanan and they might attend to those parties where they drink alcohol, and sex is everywhere.

  7. From my point of view this novel will be about people who love each other but with different social classes that were in those times a really important issue.
