Post 3 - Laura Romero
I personally found more striking the following moment in the novel:
- Gatsby's death. I felt sorry for Gatsby ,because he died alone. Not even his name or his possession could save him. None of his false friends bothered to show up for his funeral, and Fitzgerald spend some time describing how the house just stood there… empty.
As I read the novel I was thinking that in The Great Gatsby no one is happy with marriage, love, with life in general. And although the characters are always in the company of others, the isolation is an internal one. Gatsby, despite throwing lavish parties with hundreds of people, dies alone.
The text made me think about the tendency we all have to believe that if we have enough money, we can manipulate time, staying perpetually young, and buy our happiness through materialistic spending. Throughout the novel, there are many parties, a hallmark of the rich. But each festivity ends in waste or violence…
I would ask the author:
-Did you write more of yourself into the character of Nick or the character of Gatsby, or are your qualities found in both characters?
Because I would like to know if he felt represented with any of the characters.

Post 3 - Nerina Franguelli
- In chapter 7, when Tom met Wilson after he found out that Myrtle had an affair.
- Daisy´s reaction when Gatsby asked her to tell Tom that she never loved him.
- After the car accident, when Gatsby stood outside Tom’s house in case something would happen.
- When Jay was killed.
- At the end, when nobody attended Gatsby’s funeral.
While reading the novel I found interesting Gatsby behaviour and all the things he did to reconquer Daisy. Because of this I think I was expecting a happy ending and I was very surprised at the end because I didn´t see it coming at all. Maybe all I was waiting for was Daisy to stop being so selfish, tell the truth about her feelings and make a real decision.
The text made me think about the things a man in love can do in order to get what he wants. Besides it is a great representation of the “Jazz Age” and it shows clearly how money and possessions were so important for people at that time and how material things can influence our way of behave. Wealth made people feel safer but also careless with other persons´ feelings. Like Nick said: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made”.
Knowing that the novel was based on Fitzgerald´s relationship with his wife Zelda I would ask him if Gatsby´s death is related in some way with a personal experience he was going through at that moment in his life.

POST 1:
POST 3:
My predictions in the Voice Thread have been confirmed since
the setting and time was the twenties in the USA and Gatsby is definitelly a
mysterious character.
·
The quotation I’ve chosen is:
“ Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was
exempt from my reaction – Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. If
personality is an unbroken series of succesful gestures, then there was
something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life,
as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register
earthquakes ten thousand miles away”.
( Chapter
1, page 1.)
I chose it because it shows that despite the fact that
Gatsby represents all that Nick hates about the world, he cannot help but
admire him.
Characters:
Nick Carraway:
The novel’s narrator. A young man from Minnesota. He is an honest and
reflective person. He has a tendency to reserve judgment.
Daisy Buchanan:
Nick’s cousin and Tom Buchanan’s wife. She is a beautiful and popular young
woman from Louisville, Kentucky. She is also the woman Gatsby loves.
Tom Buchanan: Daisy’s wealthy husband. He is a member of a
powerful and wealthy family. Tom is an arrogant and hypocritical person. He has
social attitudes related wih racism and sexism.
Jordan Baker:
Daisy’s friend. Jordan is a beautiful competitive golfer.
Myrtle Wilson:
Tom’s lover. Tom treats her as an object.
Jay Gatsby: The
protagonist of the novel. He is a wealthy young man but no one knows how he
made his fortune. He lives in a mansion in West Egg.
- I think that the mistery about Gatsby’s identity will be
revealed. And Nick will feel sorry about his cousin Daisy and will eventually
tell her about Tom’s lover.
ü
The most striking moment for me was Gatsby’s
funeral, beacuse only a few people ( Nick, Owl Eyed, a few servants, and
Gatsby’s father) attended it whereas whenever Gatsby threw a party his mansion
was always full of people. This shows that these friends weren’t actually so since they had all dissapeared
after Gatsby’s death.
ü
As I was reading the novel I was expecting Daisy
to speak up and tell the truth about the accident and Myrtle’s death, so that
Gatsby would not have been under suspicion.
ü
The text made me think about people’s values,
how unimportant they were to people in those days. The only important thinks
for them were money, appearences, and social status. They only cared about
attending parties and having fun but they didn’t pay attention to other
people’s feelings.
ü
The question I would ask the writer is: What did
you think the reaction of high society people would be when they read your
novel?
I think they would have been outraged by the way in which he
portrayed them.

Assignment I: part II. Angela Bordi & Cecilia Pedrido
Here is the link of part II of our assignment. We've done Nick Carraway's fakebook. We've chosen one of the first parties Nick and Jordan witnessed in Gatsby's house. One reason for choosing that scene is because we wanted to make Amata be present and made her talk about her misfortune in love with a little of irony. What's more, we wanted to show how we imagined the characters were feeling at that moment but in a more relaxed way than it was in the book. We hope you enjoy it a lot and that you can find the sense of irony and comedy that we wanted to share. http://www.classtools.net/fb/6/W9B979

POST 3- Valentina Zanor
I think the most striking moments happen in chapter VII.While I was reading that
chapter, I had the feeling that nothing had happened in the previous ones. I was
puzzled twice:
the other chapters.
When I finished reading the novel, the first thing I thought about was obsessions.
Sometimes we get so obsessed with something or somebody that we can lose
everything, because we have no limits. We should be able to manage our feelings and
not to be so
easily blinded.
If I could ask the author a question I would ask him why did he chose not to engage
Nick in any kind of relationship? I expected the novel to end up with love in Nick's
life.

- First, when I realised it was Gatsby's car that hit Myrtle
- and then, when we're told through Gatsby that Daisy was driving
